Round Up of UIQ OPL

It's been three weeks now since the OPL Runtime for UIQ was announced at 3GSM - the OPL-Dev team had a tight schedule and the final builds were only completed on the Sunday beforehand, which meant there wasn't anything immediatly available for people to see what OPL could do.

That didn't stop the OPL Forum over at My-Symbian (Free registration required) getting down and dirty and discovering what they could do with the code - it's a good place to ask questions.

Steve Litchfield of 3-Lib has updated Timelog, Fairway and STB to UIQ OPL. He talks about the conversion process here. STB (Shut The Box) also includes the Source Code so you can see how things are done.

Another app with source code available is Ewan Spence's Event Core, available at FreEPOC. This is a fully commented source code for a skeleton app, showing you how everything works. There's been a lot of back and forwards on the Event Core in the OPL-Dev team to make sure everythin is done correctly. It's a great place to start you application coding from.

And in the winges there are a fair few apps undergoing beta testing before full releases over the next few weeks - and they're big hitting applications as well, not little puzzle games like Vexed (whcih should be released for UIQ anyway).

Series 90 and OPL

Since the announcement of the Nokia 7700 on Tuesday, a lot of people have got in touch with the OPL Team to ask when OPL will be available on Series 90 (which powers the 7700). Thanks for the vote of enthusiasm, but in the case of any porting of OPL to platform other than Series 60, the intention is that it will be ported, but not yet.

There are very few members of the OPL team who know Symbian C++ to the extent that is required to translate and bugfix the runtime. We've made the decision to concentrate on one platform at a time, and get that to a 1.00 release before looking at other platforms. So Series 60 (due to volume of units, and the fact that we're approaching 0.30 release in the next week) is what we are working on. Up next would be UIQ. (9210 is already at 1.00) Then we might look at Series 90.

Of course, if you've got the skills, and want to see the runtime on the other platforms, then get in touch!

Rick's Dev Expo Thoughts (Day 1)

Another long day. Went to Symbian Exposium 03, where I was surprised with the amount of interest in the open source OPL press release that went out yesterday, including interest in a P800 port. Hmmm! Watched Ewan's cracking 'open-sourcing opl' presentation -- someone said that Ewan was the best presenter they'd seen all day.
