Windows Longhorn suck...

I have recently got my hands on an Alpha version of Longhorn....and even though I knew this was a bad thing I even installed it to see the changes. Well to be honest, this is just another UI update release nothing StyleXp or ThemeXP can't do! It requires more CPU power for fancy graphics. I am so dissapointed since my old XP is still there but I can't boot it. I get errors. That will teach me right playing with alphaversions of Windows. No I have to write everything I need on CDs (200GB) and reformat the disks. :(

That really sucks. You know,i still cant find my self a suitable mainstream OS for my MP machine. My LFS(Linux from scratch)was awesome but updating on this 56K was really dificult so i deleted it(Big mistake). Longhorn you say?I just need an OS that has a descent multiprocessor kernel, like linux but more mainstream, dreaming again,i know. My dual athlon mp 1800 with 1GB ram was had 100% processor usage just from copying a Divx movie to my HDD,that is XP my friend. Posted by: GhostDog on April 20, 2003 01:18 AM

I'm using win 98 and it's still beats every other desktop os I've ever seen. If you config it well it's very stable. I've tried all of them and this one is going to stay for a long while. About the new windows, I might try it because I've heard it won't have a filesystem anymore but it will be completely sql driven... sounds interesting :) Posted by: Dazler on April 21, 2003 11:53 PM
Yes thats true. Its is called WinFS or something, which isnt included in this Alpha version. It will be added later I guess. However, you can already see some features...like show only files that start from A to D or have the string "end" in them. Its quite good, however the UI is very heavy and makes everything slow! I always have the classic 98 look on my XP. Posted by: MaleBuffy on April 22, 2003 01:25 AM
Yes,windows 98 UI is the best. But no multiprocessor support. Posted by: GhostDog on April 22, 2003 01:14 PM
Doesn't matter for me, my wallet doesn't have multiprocessor support either :D Posted by: Dazler on April 24, 2003 11:21 AM

Offcourse it doesnt work right after install, only install alpha's on a seperate disk for safety Posted by: Pro on August 1, 2003 04:32 PM
Well win98 is very very fast when configured well. If you chuck in 512Mb Ram, tell it to use all unused memory as cache (just exactly like it does on Linux and WinXP), then it just flies. However I switched to winxp because I couldn't run Dreamweaver MX and Fireworks MX at the same time since it will run out of resources and crash! Personally, I like Linux, but hate X as it is memory hungry and slow! Posted by: Dude on November 4, 2003 11:38 PM
