O'Reilly - Highlights (Part the Third)

And after the welcome distraction of ConConUK and OPL, let's get back to looking at some more of the memorable sessions (for me) at O'Reilly's Emerging Technology Conference 2024 (sometimes called Etcon, sometimes called Etech, always mentioned on IRC...)

Russ' Java Tutorial
Now all of you know I've tried and tried and tried to get my head round J2ME, and the end result was I did my best to bring OPL back, but part of me was really looking forward to Russ' telling everyone in a nice structured way about Java and how to build stuff with it. And a very good job he did with it too.

It seemeed that most of the audience already knew Java, and were looking for a "how this translates to J2ME and MIDP" so Russ pitched at hat leve. A little bit higher than I needed, but definitly suited to the audience. Russ is pretty confident once he gets going, easy to listen to, and knows his stuff (modest that he is he still wonders why he's been labelled the J2ME man on mobile devices...).

Definitly worth it for the Java people there, lots of appreciatve nods throughout. Now if only I could convince O'Reilly to give Russ a "J2ME 101" book I might not have to go around re-creating dead languages.

Nokia's Life Goes Mobile
There's been so many references to this online, to the skill and emotional depth of the speaker, to that slide, it's amazing that everyone missed the stupendous stuff he announced. (It now seems Perrt did the same speech at 3GSM).

Dan Gillmor's Newsmakers and New Technology
Dan is a journalist with the San Joes Mercury News, and a very active Blogger. But what does al this blogging, and internet activity, mean to the traditions of print journalism, sources, confirmation, leaks, scandals and dirty tricks?

Pretty much the same as before. Trust trusted sources, check out very carefully anything new. And don't rely on the net (witness our Loaf experiment). This was probably the most traditional style talk I attended at Etech and it was all the better for it. I'd go and see Dan do pretty much any talk after the professionalism of this one.
