7610 - not bad...

In my quest to actually blog something I made the decision to actually write down in public some of my brain dumps/ thoughts. This is a short one as I've got loads of things i should have done today.

Yesterday Nokia nnounced the 7610. It's there first megapixel camera (well almost megapixel), and it looks nice. True to Nokia Series 60 design features it has a slightly wacky keyboard (though less so than some). I have to admit to being tired on learning a new layout for the keypad everytime I switch phones. The design looks nice though. - sort oa stretched 7600 which is the desirable phone in the UK right now along with the 6600.

More interesting is some of the accompanying stuff. The Lifeblog software, the emphasis on Imaging and Multimdia is nice to see. I think this is the first really well done specialised smartphone. Well sort of. Once smartphone really take off they need to distiguish themsleves from each other. In a sense that's already bee done (3650 - kids cameraphone, 6600 - business phone, 7610 - multimedia phone), but the 7610 has really taken this on board and while we have to wait to see the final package I for one am quite impressed.

Sure there some things missing (like EDGE), but all in all not bad.

Reduced sized MMC has been causing some comment, but honestly I have never had a problem with MMC - I mean what's the big deal - the price these days is very similar and I buy a card put it in my phone and rarely if ever take it out. The capcity issue doesn't really run anymore with the 1GB pretac cards. I do think the extra cost of RS-MMC might be an inital turn off, but the loss in size is probably a good thing in the long run.

Because this phone is 7.0s (Symbian wise) that means it runs Series 60 Platform 2.0. Thats means it will almost certainly like 6600 themes, and perhaps more interestingly I think Lifeblog will run in the 6600 and 6620 assuming the software doesn't check what phone it is using. 7.0s also means you get funky things like GPRS browsing while having a phonecall (more pratically it means incoming SMS and MMS should not interupt GPRS browsing).

So that's Nokia 2nd Series 60 phone of the year. I wonder how many more there are to come...
