UIQ Event Core Updated to v0.61

The OPL Skeleton application Event Core, by Ewan Spence and FreEPOC, has been updated to version 0.61. The main change is the menu system now works correctly through pen taps, and can be tapped on like any other UIQ menu.

OPL at O'Reilly

I'm finally back in the UK, after talking about OPL at the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference. The talk went really well, around 70 people turned up to listen and see what OPL could do. And I expect most people at the conference got personal demos of OPL from myself (and some free OPL applications on the MMC Cards I was giving away).

There's a lot of people out there interested in OPL, and programming their smartphones. There's also some corporate interest, some from Nokia, and some from other large organisations that I need to follow up. Hopefully we'll see some new programs from people in the near future.

In summary, OPL continues onwards, gaining mindshare, momentum and new runtimes so OPL can appear on more devices.

Some people have been watching news from Etech and asked "what are we going to do now Nokia are releasing Python for Series 60?" The obvious answer is nothing. Firstly OPL isn't all about Series 60 (more on that next week), and the languages are geared to doing different things. After talking to Nokia, there should be no reason why OPL cannot call Python scripts (and vice versa).

Secondly, the more languages a platform has, the more developers there are. The more developers there are, the more applications. The more applications, the better the community for the device.

Event Core - A Building Block for OPL

Ewan Spence and FreEPOC have released Event Core for Series 60 OPL. This is an application (with source code supplied) that does nothing. But it does show how to use menus, key inputs, react to events, save changes between instances of the program running, and so on. It's a great place to start learning OPL after your first Hello World application. A version for the Nokia Communicator is available from the same page.

OPL-Dev Team Announces version 0.30 of the Series 60 Runtime and Documentation Website

The OPL-Dev team behind OPL (the Open Programming Language) for Symbian OS are delighted to announce the availability of version 0.30 of both the Runtime and SDK's for Series 60 devices.

New Features in the 0.30 Release.

A full list of changes can be found in the accompanying documentation, but the major visible changes are as follows.

  • Full compatibility for the latest version of Symbian OS (7.0s) in devices such as the Nokia 6600 is now provided.
  • OPL allows Full Screen mode, and control over all the status bars through the AppFrame.opx language extension .dll.
  • OPL Developers can now use the built in Menu System for user interaction.

Menu support on the Series 60 has been one of most hotly awaited additions to the runtime since v0.20. Now that it's here, let's see what we can do on Series 60.

The 0.30 Runtime and SDK is availabel at the Source Forge Project Page.

    OPL Wiki Online

Thanks to some sterling work by Rafe Blandford of All About Symbian, the OPL Wiki is now up and running.

A Wiki is a database running through a normal web browser that allows anyone who registers, to edit and add content. The next few weeks will see the OPL team (and some new volunteers to the team) populate the Wiki with documentation, and an up to date list of commands and their syntax. Hopefully there should be more than enough documentation there when the PC Developers Suite and Series 60 Launcher app are given a pubic launch.

OPL At The Series 60 Community Awards

Ewan is just back from attending the Series 60 Community awards, and took the time to demonstrate and make a case for OPL to Nokia, Sendo and Siemens. He also made sure that many developers are aware of OPL and how they can help OPL and OPL help the,. The initial feedback has been good, and there are a few things to follow up.

The idea of a simple PC Developer Enviroment struck a chord with a lot of people. And while there might be a few more issues to sort out around this PC Tool, OPL on Series 60 is definitly moving forward.

    Progress Report

Yes it's been a long time since something significant happened with OPL on the public front, but there is still a lot of progress being made behind the scenes.

The Sereis 60 runtime is Rick's focus at the moment - and the implementation of Menus and Dialogs is the main thing being worked on - with that in place, all you people raring to go when the menu support became active should be able to release your applications.

We've got a few PC Developers to look over some ideas for a simplified PC Dev enviroment, and one Series 60 author is bouncing around some ideas for an OPL Launcher on the device.

Hopefully we'l have some more news and a clear indication of those last two elements at some point next week.
