Working on the opl-dev project

Looks like I'll mostly be documenting the opl-dev project stuff here. And why not, it's good to be able to write some of this stuff down.

I've just been playing around with CVS, getting the opl-dev source code up onto SouceForge.net. The process is well documented, and looks like a muppet could do it. But what's not explained is the speed. Or rather, the lack of it.

I typed the bourne shell runes to get the import started, and waited for the list of shiny new source files to appear. And waited. And waited. Thought about doing the washing up. Did the washing up. Still no feedback, no file list. Thought about taking the dog for a walk. But that would have involved finding a pet shop open on a Sunday, somewhere to actually buy a dog. Seemed a bit over the top.

And then, miracle! Lots of lovely filenames appearing, and shed loads of files in the CVS repository, and -- damn it -- a server aborted, broken pipe message. But it's cool, didn't impact the transfer, so it's arrived safe and sound. Of course, the next thing to do is get it all out again, make sure it hasn't been munged as it winged its way across the Atlantic. Nope, it's all there. Phew!

Time for some fresh air, I've been cooped up in my dining room for the past two days. Hmm, maybe I will get a dog after all...

Peeve of the day: getting a 'new mail' purr from my iBook, then checking Mail only to find spam. Spam that Mail has already moved to the Junk folder. Argh! Why purr for spam?

Another long day. Went to Symbian Exposium 03, where I was surprised with the amount of interest in the open source OPL press release that went out yesterday, including interest in a P800 port. Hmmm! Watched Ewan's cracking 'open-sourcing opl' presentation -- someone said that Ewan was the best presenter they'd seen all day. Got home to find an email from SourceForge saying that the opl-dev web site wasn't in compliance with SF policies, the download files have to be managed thru SF's File Release System, so spent a while sorting that out. And reported the first bug against opl-dev -- "opl.app reports an error when run". First of many I hope! If there are no bug reports, it means there's no testing going on. Oh yeah, I sorted out that iBook Mail problem too: removed the option to purr for new mail, and added a new rule to purr only after spam has been processed. Result!
