Home Again - Time To Plan For Palmsource Dev Con

Etech is definitly over, I'm at home, waiting to see just how bad Eastbound jetlag is going to hit me this time. Up next (at least in terms of travelling) is going to be the Palmsource Developer Conference in San Joes at the end of MP3. Here comes the banner...

Palmsource Dev Con

..I'll be covering the conference for The Mobiles Podcast along with a few other sites. Having been at the European version of the Palmsource DevCon in Septermber 2003, I'm looking forward a much larger conference. This conference is going to be pretty key to Palmsource. While the Treo 600 and Treo 650 doing well on a number of networks, and new partners and phones signed up and launched, all would seem well. But there are a huge number of stormclouds as well. PalmOne need to have some new PDA models that rival the Treo. The relationship between PalmOne and Palmsource needs to be incredibly strong for Palmsource to survive. And pretty much every market analyst needs to be convinvced that they're around for the long term.

Do we want a two horse race (Symbian and Microsoft), or will we have a strong triumverate (include Palmsource with Symbian and Microsoft). The DevCon will put Palmsource on show, and everyone is going to be extrapolating the future of the smartphone race. Talk about pressure on the opening keynotes...

Hi Ewan. I'm playing "Vexed: The Ancient Riddles" Version 1.10 on Nokia 9500 Symbian, which I am enjoying very much! The only trouble is that I'm stuck on "The Original Levels - Words of Love - Level 34". Could you email me the "Access Level Solution" key or direct me to an appropriate Web site? Sorry if this is the wrong forum: I have also sent this to [email protected], but Vexed seems to have disappeared from there! Many thanks. Posted by: Doug Lawry on March 23, 2005 07:14 PM
All of Palmones investment capital (by that I mean about 75%) will be going towards smarphone development. They have clearly identified their market, both by the well faring Treo range, and by the exclusive partnering with packetvideo (yup, they still exist). Packetvideo have a real advantage in that it is designed for mp4 and more specifically 3gpp content. With 3gpp2 having a large amount of licensing atoms, DRM'd content provision deliverable direct to handset will rival microsofts, and kill realplayer (especially since Nokia have partnered with microsoft recently). With content being the killer app for 2005/6, Palm have, imo, placed themselves incredibly well in positioning the Palm OS as a serious rival to symbian. In terms of investing in devices to "rival" the treo, I dont think that's the right way to look at it; the usage and market are entirely different. Palm1 will continue to shift large numbers of the Tungsten E, with their only major investment being in the Tungsten E2 - Im sure Jeff Hawkins is glad to be well shot and concentrating on Human brain network style future devices =) Posted by: alfie on March 24, 2005 06:18 PM
