It's A Mad World

Wo remembers "Always On My Mind" by the Pet Shop Boys. Good. Keep that in mind.

The Christmas Chart has been announced in the UK, and Glam Stars The Darkness (who have the only original Christmas Song that made any dent on the charts) has finished at Number Two???

It's a Mad World indeed when yet another dirge makes it to number one ahead of what is going to keep Justin Hawkins and co in pension money for the next hundred years (thanks to whatever 'Now That's What I Call Christmas' gets called next year. And the year after. And the year after that). At least the Christmas Number Two is a Christmas Song, with sleighbells, childrens choir, cheesy vide's, and a decent guitar solo.

Of course The Darkness can take solace in the fact that only one song truly announces the festive season to the masses, and that's The Fairytale of New York, by Kirsty MacColl and The Pouges. That only made number two in the Christmas Charts as well. Remember who beat them?

Ah the clue is in the blog, it was the Pet Shop Boys. In the year of 1987 if I recall. The Christmas charts don't really mean jot anymore. Long gone are the days when there was an actual race for the number one slot. There was an outcry in 1993 I think when Mr Blobby made it there, the next year East 17 did it with something completely unrelated to mistletoe bound festivities. My fave Christmas song is still "Christmas Wrapping" by the Waitresses. Posted by: Jason Bell on December 22, 2003 09:47 AM
Thanks for the reminder, I need to own a copy of "Christmas Wrapping," it's one of those songs I've never gotten around to buying. Good tune. If we're talking pop Christmas tunes, I always liked that one by George Michael, and (I confess) "Do They Know It's Christmas?" I have "Fairytale of New York" on a compilation, at least. And I will never own a "Now That's What I Call..." any kind of music. --Jason (USA) Posted by: Jason Karney on December 22, 2003 02:17 PM
