OPL Runtime and Tools Released for UIQ Platform

The third Symbian Platform (after the Communicators and Series 60) can now support OPL. Following a quiet development process, the OPL-Dev team is pleased to offer not only an OPL Runtime and SDK for UIQ, but a full suite of OPX Language extensions, providing access to almost every facet of the UIQ Platform.

Thanks also go to UIQ themselves, who have announced OPL at the annual 3GSM jaunt to Cannes., and have generally been really supportive of getting OPL onto devices such as the Sony Ericsson P900 and the Motorola A920.

Developers receive free development environment for UIQ based mobile phones

3GSM World Congress, Cannes, France, February 23, 2024 - UIQ Technology today announces the introduction of OPL (Open Programming Language) for the UIQ user interface platform. OPL is an interpreted pogramming language similar to BASIC and purpose-built for Symbian OS.

OPL for UIQ is made available through the effort of the open source developer community and was made possible through Symbian’s decision to make OPL available as open source.

With the availability of OPL, developers can now chose to develop their applications, services and content for UIQ based mobile phones in C++, Java, Visual Basic or OPL, further strengthening the already vibrant developer community for UIQ based mobile phones such as the Sony Ericsson P800 and P900, Motorola A920 and A925 and BenQ P30.

"We're very happy to see the open source developer community at work and appreciate the availability of another programming language for the UIQ user interface platform. The availability of OPL for UIQ further increases the options for developers to chose the most suitable programming language for the task at hand, and proves the value of an active developer community", Peter Wikström, Marketing Program Manager for Developer Relations at UIQ Technology, said.

Rick Andrews, Project Manager at Symbian said "Releasing OPL for UIQ makes UIQ phones programmable by a larger community from developers to business professionals to hobbyists." said Rick Andrews, Senior Technical Consultant, Symbian Software Ltd and co-maintainer of the OPL project. "OPL as an open source project has the support of the Symbian OS community".

"With the UIQ release of OPL, not only do we open up the UIQ platform (by providing it with a powerful language with a shallow learning curve), but the OPL project can begin to show the "write once run everywhere" nature of OPL over the entire Symbian OS range of devices. Ewan Spence, OPL documentation maintainer and OPL application developer, said.

The OPL environment consists of a runtime and development tools. Being designed for Symbian OS, OPL is simple to extend to offer access to the rich functionality of Symbian OS.

OPL consists primarily of the following components:
* The runtime that runs on Symbian OS phones
* The translator that runs on Symbian OS phones or as a PC-based tool
* OPLTools that run on a PC
* TextEd that runs on Symbian OS phones to allow for on-target development
* DemoOPL is a comprehensive OPL example application
* OPXs are extensions to OPL written in C++ which run on Symbian OS phones
* OPLRSS is a language localization tool which runs on a PC

OPL for UIQ is entirely free to download, use, and develop with.

I am new to OPL. We would like to use OPL to access the Email Setting in the UIQ Device. Is it supported now? If not, how? Regards Billy Ng Posted by: Billy Ng on April 28, 2024 05:28 AM
